The Breakfast Cup
A few days ago, during a conversation with a colleague I mentioned a breakfast cup. I explained the Bernardaud breakfast cup in the Reine Elisabeth and Marie Antoinette patterns are substantially larger than the breakfast cups in the Herned Chinese Bouquet Raspberry and Eton patterns and Royal Copenhagen Gold Fan (photo includes a Franciscan Del Monte Demitasse for perspective). A cafe au Lait is just coffee with warm milk, but it becomes an experience when drinking from a Bernardaud breakfast cup.
First, I prepare the coffee in a Bodum Chambord French Press (I have many sizes). Next, after I have warmed some milk, I put the milk in the Bodum glass frother, and I quickly froth the milk until it looks nice and frothy. As I pour the warm foam into the wide Bernardaud breakfast cup, I ponder whether or not I could have a second career as a barista! Drinking a coffee au lait from a cup that is 4 1/4 in wide is truly an experience because the width of the cup allows for more foam. Endless foam…like ocean waves.
